It’s officially Fall, and the temperature is dropping. It’s the time of the year in which many Canadian Snowbirds start to book their trip to warmer climes, so should you get Snowbird travel insurance for seniors? We’re answering your questions and wishing you a fantastic trip!
Travel insurance has been growing in popularity in recent years, mainly due to a decrease in price and competitive annual plans for those who are more frequent flyers. Travel insurance can also provide you with peace of mind for COVID-related scenarios. This extra security gives you the chance to enjoy your vacation without wondering, “what if…?”.
What is Snowbird travel insurance?
With so many Canadians enjoying trips to more Southerly locations during our harsh winters, travel insurance specifically for this purpose has found its place. Snowbirds are usually older, retired Canadians who favour long vacations in the US and other regions during the winter months. As such, they have specific needs that aren’t met by traditional travel insurance coverage.
How is Snowbird travel insurance different from regular travel insurance?
While standard travel insurance is a great product, most policies are designed for an “average” trip – this means younger, predominantly healthy travellers who take short trips throughout the year.
Our Snowbirds Travel Insurance policies were created specifically to offer maximum coverage to our unique Snowbird senior travellers. They are available on a daily or annual basis to suit your needs. They even cover some pre-existing conditions, vehicle return, and meals and accommodation if your return journey is delayed through illness or injury.
Plus, you will be able to pop home from Christmas, birthdays, or to visit friends; it won’t affect your coverage. No more missed holidays with your family or precious moments via Zoom.
What COVID coverage will I get with Snowbird travel insurance?
We know that COVID is still impacting many people’s peace of mind when they travel, but Snowbird travel insurance includes several features to help ease your worries:
- $5,000,000 for emergency medical care per trip
- Hospitalization fees
- Emergency repatriation, when necessary and based on your medical condition and medical follow-up upon arrival
- Transportation and out-of-pocket expenses for a relative coming to your bedside if you are hospitalized for more than seven days

What options are available?
Depending on your circumstances, you may want to opt for medical-only coverage, the cheapest option available. Or you can expand this to an Annual Medical Package+ policy which can work out very economically if you are looking at an extended trip or several trips throughout the winter months. We also have an Annual Package+ for full comprehensive coverage.
