The cost of the dental coverage varies based on your age, gender and the number of dependents.

“There is only one dental plan available in the market as a standalone product and it is offered by Medavie Blue Cross.

Currently, this is the only dental plan available in the market if you are looking strictly for dental insurance.”

Benefits Of Dental Insurance

There is a proven link between oral health and good overall health. Seeing your dentist regularly is an important part of maintaining good oral health to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Having oral health issues such as cavities and gum disease can lead to more serious health issues, such as diabetes, respiratory problems, heart disease and stroke and many others.

Having dental insurance can help to offset the costs of routine dentist visits for your annual checkup and cleaning, x-rays, fillings, extractions, denture services and more. Have peace of mind in knowing that if an unforeseen dental issue arises, you can go to the dentist to get proper treatment without an expensive dental bill.

Millions of people in Canada do not have an appropriate dental plan in place. Although provincial health plans are available, these only cover specific dental services for certain individuals, mainly children and family income restrictions do exist. In addition, these provincial plans do not cover the wide assortment of dental care that children need. They also vary by province as to the services they cover, the age of the children who can access these services and the cost of the service that is reimbursed. For instance, fillings and extractions are not covered for children on some provincial plans.

Below are the provincial dental plans currently in place for children in Atlantic Canada.

Nova Scotia Children’s Oral Health Program

Newfoundland Children’s Dental Health Program

New Brunswick Healthy Smiles, Clear Vision Program

Does Your Family Need a Dental Insurance Plan?

Keep in mind the provincial dental plans only cover some of the dental care children require. There are other routine services children often require that are not covered by such plans. These being:

  • Additional Cleanings
  • Fillings – some provincial plans do not cover fillings for children
  • Orthodontics

If these services are important to you and your family or if you reside in a province that has no provincial dental plan in place for children, you will pay out of pocket. Some of these services such as orthodontics can be costly.

*Note: A 6-month waiting period applies.

What are the waiting periods intended for?

Waiting periods for dental coverage is very common with most dental insurance plans. These waiting periods are in place only to protect the insurer from the risk of having one obtaining the coverage, use their benefits, and cancel within the same month they obtained their coverage.

This would result in having a shortfall for the insurer as they would be paying higher claims but did not collect enough premiums to offset.

By having these waiting periods, this allows the insurer to maintain a reasonable cost for the dental plan for everyone!

However, Blue Cross will consider waiving the waiting periods completely if one can provide a proof of loss and have had previous dental coverage within the last 30-60 days.

Therefore, if you had group benefits through your previous employer or through another individual health and dental plan from a different insurer that was recently terminated; we would need to provide Blue Cross with a written letter (proof of loss) from your previous employer or the insurer – Blue Cross will then waive the waiting periods and you will get access to the dental coverage based on the effective date you have chosen on your application!

Under the Elements plan, one can obtain more comprehensive dental coverage such as periodontal services, major services for crowns, implants, bridges, and dentures as well as orthodontics for children under 18.
