If you or a loved one has a pre-existing condition, you may feel like your insurance options are limited. However, you can get coverage across multiple types of insurance for pre-existing conditions; as long as you don’t leave it too late.
With the stress of your pre-existing condition, you may have let your health insurance coverage slip down your priority list. It’s worth remembering that insurance doesn’t just benefit you; it helps those dependent on us and those we will eventually leave behind.
Health insurance
When you have a pre-existing condition, you may find you can’t qualify for standard health insurance policies. Specific products exist for this very reason. Our Guaranteed Issue Health Plan provides coverage for those with pre-existing conditions. The premiums are slightly higher than a medically underwritten policy, but it is still cheaper than you would think. Some of the benefits under a Guaranteed Issue Heath plan have an annual maximum, but we will be happy to talk you through them.
You may be on a treatment or prescription to treat or manage your condition that isn’t overly expensive. In some instances, it can be financially beneficial to have a medically underwritten policy, even with some exclusions. We can compare your costs under both coverage styles to see which is the right path for you.
Exclusions
Exclusions due to a pre-existing condition don’t have to stay permanently marked on your coverage. If you have been treatment-free for more than 12 months, you can apply to have it removed. It is, however, at the insurer’s discretion to approve or deny the request based on the medical report received from your physician.
As your advisors, we will assess your needs and find a solution. We will provide you with the best health insurance coverage option based on your current situation, with or without a pre-existing condition. We will find a solution for you, no matter what.
Group plans
Coverage under a group plan, such as those through your employer, should be supplemented with Assured Access. Assured Access guarantees your insurability is protected while under a group plan. You will have the option of private/individual health coverage once you leave the group plan without having to requalify medically. Regardless of any health changes you had under the group plan, you will not have any exclusions on your individual coverage (other than the ones you may have had when you originally applied for the group plan).
Critical illness cover
Most insurance with pre-existing conditions doesn’t cover the listed issue, but you can still lock in critical illness cover for all future conditions. Critical illness can give you or your loved ones a payment if you’re diagnosed with a serious medical issue. The specific conditions covered will depend on your policy, but typically people want to be covered in the event of cancer, stroke, or heart attack.
Critical illness coverage can give you the funds to pay for unforeseen medical costs, take time off work, or plan for the worst. It may not be pleasant thinking about it, but adding financial stress to the pot at such a crucial time can make a stressful situation unbearable. Critical illness coverage is extremely important to consider if your current condition makes you more susceptible to further health issues.
Life insurance
Life insurance for pre-existing conditions can vary depending on the policy type. You can opt for no medical life insurance, which avoids a medical assessment altogether and is quick and easy to set up. No medical life insurance is split into the simplified type and guaranteed issue. Anyone can set up a guaranteed issue plan, even if they have previously been refused life insurance. If you qualify for the simplified type, you will be able to lock in a higher level of coverage.
