Benefits Of Dental Insurance
There is a proven link between oral health and good overall health. Seeing your dentist regularly is an important part of maintaining good oral health to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Having oral health issues such as cavities and gum disease can lead to more serious health issues, such as diabetes, respiratory problems, heart disease and stroke and many others.
Having dental insurance can help to offset the costs of routine dentist visits for your annual checkup and cleaning, x-rays, fillings, extractions, denture services and more. Have peace of mind in knowing that if an unforeseen dental issue arises, you can go to the dentist to get proper treatment without an expensive dental bill.
Millions of people in Canada do not have an appropriate dental plan in place. Although provincial health plans are available, these only cover specific dental services for certain individuals, mainly children and family income restrictions do exist. In addition, these provincial plans do not cover the wide assortment of dental care that children need. They also vary by province as to the services they cover, the age of the children who can access these services and the cost of the service that is reimbursed. For instance, fillings and extractions are not covered for children on some provincial plans.
Below are the provincial dental plans currently in place for children in Atlantic Canada.

Does Your Family Need a Dental Insurance Plan?
Keep in mind the provincial dental plans only cover some of the dental care children require. There are other routine services children often require that are not covered by such plans. These being:
- Additional Cleanings
- Fillings – some provincial plans do not cover fillings for children
- Orthodontics
If these services are important to you and your family or if you reside in a province that has no provincial dental plan in place for children, you will pay out of pocket. Some of these services such as orthodontics can be costly.
